Blast from the Past > Anniversary of PowerPC

It’s still strange to me that this small blog is actually celebrating 7 years of anniversary.  The original idea was only to post a couple of posts/apps that worked on the PowerPC, but we kept finding more and more out there… I already have many bookmarked for future testing, because there are more to come for the PowerPC community.

We did take some time off, because we got busy with our standard jobs and at the end of the day I just wanted to come home and watch Survivor and Amazing Race and go to bed.  I kept procrastinating to login and write a new post, putting it off for “tomorrow” which ended up turning to weeks and months….

Now we are back, and I recently purchased a mint condition PowerBook G4 (15”/1.66GHz/1.5GB).  I’m very proud of it, it’s a great machine and I’m bringing this blog back to life one more time, and breathing life into my stainless steel PowerPC!

So, if you find yourself like me, coming into possession of a brand new “old” Mac – wondering what the top 5 essential apps you need to have on your computer…then read on!  Listed below are the Essential 5 apps for you (in my opinion):

TenFourFox – Yes, a trusted browser is a must for any PowerPC user.  TenFourFox is putting in great effort and keeping us updated! – http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

iWork 09’ – This office suite it’s fantastic, still very up to date and you can pull off great results using Keynote, Number and Pages.  Before I was using AppleWorks due to a nostalgic feeling, but iWork works amazing!  Also deserving of a mention here is LibreOffice 5 (but still under development > http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/). iWork 09′ you can find for a great price at https://www.ebay.com/ or https://www.craigslist.com/about/sites

VLC – If you choose to keep your Mac PowerPC free of excessive software, embracing the minimalist movement – then just install this app for your media player, because it will play any type of media movie format.  Super powerful! – https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

Gimp – A Classic of the classics – everybody needs to have this app because before the internet you would have a computer to play with apps like Gimp. – https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

AppDelete – They say you only need to drag your app to the garbage bin, but I personally do prefer to use an app to take care of that. – http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete

Now my friends, you are ready to start!

Since we are an independent blog and there is an annual cost for running this blog any support/donation would be highly appreciated.

Thank you 😀

Powerful Disc Burning

One thing that we “PowerPC” can do and the new generation can not is burning CD/DVD.  So unless you want to spend $89 for an Apple USB SuperDrive you better keep your good old PowerPC somewhere in the house, and by the way if you don’t have any G4/G5 machine you can get one for way less than that.  By the way did you guys notice the G3 machines are getting expensive at the market?

Like we are always searching for FREE material this couldn’t be different.

* Disco (FREE) – PowerPC Friendly – 10.3 Panther / 10.4 Tiger / 10.5 Leopard. Easy to use in 3 steps: Drag, Drop and Disco.  Very Powerful disc burning.  DOWNLOAD HERE

Customize the OS X Services Menu

I found these informations very interesting and next follow the link to an application call Scrubber.

* How to Customize the OS X Services Menu – http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/07/29/how-to-customize-the-os-x-services-menu/

* Scrubber – 1.1.5 – PowerPC Friendly. 10.4/10.5 (Tiger and Leopard) – http://manytricks.com/servicescrubber/

The services menu be much more useful if it weren’t overcrowded by services you never even thought of using? Shouldn’t there be a way to edit that menu? Enter Service Scrubber. With Service Scrubber, you can:

  • Restructure the services menu
  • Change service keyboard shortcuts
  • Disable and re-enable services

Once your services menu has been scrubbed, you’ll be surprised how useful it actually is.

AvidemuX – Movie Editor (Free)

I wish I had more time to answer all the e-mails I get from my readers and to be able to do some research to help everybody find applications.  Unfortunately during the summer it’s difficult to find the time to spend hours in front of my computer.  Slowly as summer progresses into fall, you’ll see more from MacPowerPC!

A long time ago, a few people asked me about some applications to edit movies.  Obviously, my first answer is iMovie, I don’t do movie editing and if so it’s very basic!  In my travels, I’ve  come across a great program called Avidemux.

* Avidemux (2.5.3) – Free – PowerPC 10.2 (Jaguar here guys) or later.  It’s free open source and multi-platform software.  The interface might not be the best thing you have seen but the application is very straightforward. It supports video formats that iMovie does not and is very powerful for a simple cutting, filtering, and encoding. I might have to mention again that its FREE and this is what MacPowerPC is all about.

HDRtist PowerPC / HDR Photos

I have some very very good news for PowerPC users that love to take pictures and play around with them.  Recently I got an e-mail from one of my readers asking me if I had some recommendations for HDR software.  Well, to be honest I didn’t even know what HDR photos were, so I went to Google and “Browser, Browser, on the Mac, can’t you show me what the heck is HDR Imaging?” and this what my first stop before a second search – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_imaging .  Now knowing what HDR was, it was time to dig up PowerPC compatibly and after some research I came out with this application that I’m looking forward to sharing with my readers!

HDRtist – 1.2.0 (Free) PowerPC friendly Tiger / Leopard / 10.4/10.5 – http://www.ohanaware.com/hdrtist/ – You guys can download it straight from this web-site, on the corner where it says “New Version:1.3.2” there is a drop-down and if you click it, you will see the PowerPC listed.  This application is as simple as drag and drop with a streamlined interface, your photos will never be the same.  The results are very professional.  HDRtist Pro is also available, but I recommend that you contact the developers to make sure they are still providing the right license for your version.

Image Tricks on PowerPC (Photo/Image Editor)

A while ago I found this application and installed it on my PowerPC, and it worked great.  So I decided to save the link in my bookmarks but because I have so many bookmarked pages, it takes me forever to find things!  Many of you will know what I mean!  Today I am pleased to finally share a great Photo and Image Editing program for Mac PowerPC.

* Image Tricks – http://belightsoft.com/products/products.php – It’s a very powerful photo image editing program, easy to use and a very friendly interface that makes it even easier to test the effects that are divided in 3 tabs: Filters/Quartz/Generators.  You can drag and drop photos from iPhoto and save in formats like: PDF/TIFF/GIF/JPEG/PNG.  If you are looking for something easy with fast results, without spending money and excess time to learn the application.  Image Tricks will fit you like a glove, but also will enhance your photos/Images and make them appear more professional.  If you decide to go PRO you will have even more options/features (of course).

Image Tricks – 3.0.4 (FREE) – 10.5 / Leopard – http://belightsoft.com/imagetricks/update/update.php

Image Tricks – 2.4.2 (FREE) – 10.4 / Tiger – http://belightsoft.com/imagetricks/update/update.php

iConvertX Audio/Video PowerPC

It’s always important to have access to a good application that easily converts your video and audio.  iConvertX not only completes the conversion quickly, but anyone can figure how how to work it.  It’s as easy as drag and drop…so even your grandmother could figure out how to work it!

iConvertX 4.0.1 (Shareware $3.75) (First 5 times are free to try) http://joris-vervuurt.com/page4/page4.php  – PowerPC friendly, runs on 10.5 / 10.4 / 10.3 – Leopard / Tiger / Panther.

P.S.:  It seems Joris Vervuurt also developed iTubex, an application that allows you to download videos from Youtube.  As far as I can see, version 8.0 will work on PowerPC running 10.5, but unfortunately I didn’t find a safe source to download the application, to do my tests.  If you guys would like to share the results or links, please feel free to drop us a line to let us know how it worked for you!

List of format that will convert:

.mp4 / .flv / .3gp / .pct / .m4v / .avi / .dv / .mov / .flc / .qtl / .wav / .aiff / .au / .moov / .mp3 / .swa / .m1a / .mp2 / .mpa / .mpeg / .mpg / .m1s / .mpm / .divx / .mkv / .gvi / .vp6 / .vfw

Read/Write NTFS (hard-drive format) on PowerPC

I just found myself in a situation that I never would have thought I’d find myself in.  I’m the kind of Mac user that thinks I don’t need anything from Microsoft (wrong).  I always choose to format my external hard-drives using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) even when I know that it would be “safe” to format on FAT32.  Recently, I was traveling a few weeks ago and I met a good friend of mine that wanted me to share some of my files with him and vice versa.  When I plugged in my hard drive, I could not transfer any of my files because it was locked.  When I realized that his hard drive was formated to NTFS…well I just became sad.  So back I went to http://google.com (like always) and here I found few options that helped me out, that I’d like to share with you.

NTFS 3G – 2010.10.2 (Free) http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.ca/ . Download here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/catacombae/files/NTFS-3G%20for%20Mac%20OS%20X/2010.10.2/ntfs-3g-2010.10.2-macosx.dmg/download

Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.4 – (Demo $31.00) – http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/  10.4 / 10.5 – Tiger / Leopard PowerPC.

* MacFuse – 2.0 (Free) – http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/ .  10.4 / 10.5 – Tiger / Leopard PowerPC

* OSXFUSE – 2.5.4 – (Free) – http://osxfuse.github.com/ .  10.5 – Leopard.

Reggie Asworth’s Applications (AppDelete/VidConvert)

This post is supposed to be just about AppDelete, but when browsing the web, I noted that the developer also has another conversion app that works on the PowerPC so this became a double post!

AppDelete is shareware but it definitely does the job! If you are looking for a very easy to use “drag and drop” uninstaller that also allows you to browse your application, screensaver, widgets, as you uninstall, then I think this is a great option for you.  It properly uninstalls the applications without leaving any files behind. (Trial version will give you 5 uses)

AppDelete 3.2.8 ($7.99) PowerPC – 10.5 Leopard – http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete

AppDelete 2.2.4 ($5.00) PowerPC – 10.3/10.4 Panther/Tiger – http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete

VidConvert also follows the same layout, it’s very easy to use and the best feature is the “drag and drop”.  It will convert any type of video into one of the many popular formats of today. (Supported output – iPhone, iPad, iPod, Retina, Apple TV, QuickTime, .mp4, .avi, DivX, Xvid, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DVD (.vob), Windows Media, Flash, Matroska (.mkv), Theora (.ogg), .m4a, .mp3, .aiff, .wav, .wma, .ac3) (Trial version will convert only 3 minutes sample videos.

* VidConvert 1.4.1 ($7.99) – PowerPC 10.5 Leopard – http://www.reggieashworth.com/vidconvert
