In my opinion, its the most classic of the classics and it’s probably the most famous Image / Photo Editing application for Mac platform. This application is supposed to come installed in every single Mac computer (in my opinion) but for some reason Apple didn’t think to add this application to their platform. Microsoft is still delivering windows with Paint and most people need something that is a very friendly interface, easy to use and capable of atleast basic image / photo editing…and this is what GIMP is all about.
GIMP 2.8.4 (Free) – PowerPC friendly – Tiger 10.4.11 / Leopard 10.5.7+. (They provide support for those Intel felines as well. http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html
I also wanted to make mention of a few other applications, including:
Seashore 0.5.1 (Free) – PowerPC friendly – Tiger 10.4.11 or later. Also a great option of open source for Image editors. – http://seashore.sourceforge.net/The_Seashore_Project/About.html
iPaint 1.9 (Free) – PowerPC friendly – Leopard 10.5 – Based on famous Paintbrush – http://ipaint.sourceforge.net/
Paintbrush 2.1.1 (Free) – PowerPC friendly – Leopard 10.5. Talking about classics, this is a simple paint program similar to Microsoft Paint and MacPaint. – http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/
Vanilla 3.0 1 .0 (Free) – PowerPC friendly – Leopard 10.5. Simple drawing application inspired by Paintbrush. – http://sourceforge.net/projects/vanilladraw/
Acorn 1.5.4 (Demo) PowerPC friendly – Tiger 10.4 / Leopard 10.5. – Bitmap Image Editor. http://flyingmeat.com/acorn/
Vanilla seems to be Intel only in version 2 and 3. Only version 1 is a Universal Binary.
GraphicConverter 7 and earlier runs on PowerPC and allows you to do some bitmap editing: http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/download/
The best painting software I’ve ever used on a mac is ArtRage. If you contact them directly they will still sell the powerpc version (ver. 2) for around $29.
Nice survey, thx!
Photoshop CS is still compatible with Panther and it works beautifully.
…and don’t forget Photoshop CS4, the last version of this venerable image editing masterpiece to run on PowerPC!
Thank you for sharing.
There is a version of the Pixel painter GRAFX2 for the PPC
Has anyone verified that Gimp 2.8 now runs on PPC? Last I saw 2.6 was the last non-intel version.
2.6.11 is the last ppc compatible version.
