Dropbox Dropping Suport for PowerPC

I didn’t receive a good news right in the beginning of 2015 to PowerPC community.  Recently I found out that the great application/cloud storage Dropbox is dropping the support for PowerPC machines.  This will leave us behind for good, not being able to sync devices with PowerPC computers will drop us down.

I really hope Dropbox will reconsider the decision and I believe many users of dropbox are PowerPC users due other computers/devices has their own cloud applications.

I want to point out the people from VivaPowerPC wrote a letter to Dropbox team and let’s hope they will supporting us.

We can always use the social media to let @dropbox know we are using the app.

We are really on the edge but to use a PowerPC it’s a matter of option at this point.

  1. I did write to them and they did reply. They don’t seem too bothered even though there is a healthy PowerPC community out there.

  2. This makes me very sad, I don’t think I can use my powermac g5 after support ends since I use it only for studying and thus syncing maps with other students.

Thanks for keeping the blog going, you’re my hero man!

  3. I haven’t used DropBox in ages. Outlook.com has OneDrive cloud storage that is free when you open a Microsoft account. It’s 25 GB of storage and you can share files with anyone, even those who don’t have an Outlook/MSN account.

  4. Sad news! It doesn’t seem as they listened to our requests to continue supporting PPC Macs. Received this in the email a few days ago:

This is a reminder that as of May 18th, Dropbox will no longer support the OS X Tiger 10.4 and OS X Leopard 10.5 operating systems.

Since one or more of your computers is running the Dropbox desktop application (client) on an older operating system (OS X Tiger 10.4 or OS X Leopard 10.5), you’ll need to update to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later to continue to access your files through the Dropbox desktop application. Apple’s instructions on how to update your operating system can be found here.

If you’re not sure which of your computers is running OS X Tiger 10.4 or OS X Leopard 10.5, you can visit your Dropbox account settings here to view all of your Dropbox-connected devices.

If you don’t want to or can’t update your operating system, your files will still be available through the Dropbox website. However, on May 18th you’ll be signed out of your Dropbox application on your computer and the Dropbox desktop application will no longer be accessible.

We apologize for the inconvenience. For more information, please check out our Help Center.

    Sincerely,
    – The Dropbox Team

  5. When Apple dropped iDisk I developed an alternative using Transmit (by Panic) to access an Amazon S3 account. Amazon S3 is both cheaper and more secure than Dropbox. Transmit has versions for all of my Macs. I have four using including my PowerMac G5. Version 4.0 works on Leopard. Using Transmit you can mount your S3 account as a local disk so it works the same as iDisk did or Dropbox does. Panic only lists the most version of Transmit on its webpage, but if you contact them they will make earlier versions available.

  6. Since Dropbox is no longer available on my old PowerPC Macs I switched to using webdav-services, some providers offer.
Just mount the service via Finder/Goto/Connect To Server and login e.g. https://webdav.mc.gmx.net for GMX customers (free account with 5GB free storage).
Manual or scheduled File-Sync could be established by CarbonCopyCloner or ChronoSync,
both availabe for Tiger/Leopard & PPC. But it’s not as smooth as Dropbox and has to be handled with care and a proper TimeMachine routine on one or more Macs.
Would be great to collect some more webdav-service addresses.
    Cheers, Bob

    • Try Cloud Me. http://cloudme.com.
3GB free webdav space. Use browser once to make a ‘shared folder’. This can then be seen across Mac PC and Linux systems. For Mac + PC users use https://webdav.cloudme.com for Linux (Mate) or others use Server (WebDav) – https- then: webdav.cloudme.com

Give that a try! It works on my Mac PPC (Tiger 10.4) daily.

  7. Mac PPC users: I have found a solution to the DROPBOX (or iDisk) problem!! I still use my Mac PPC daily (Tiger 10.4), but also (must have) Windows 8 and Linux (Ubuntu Mate + Fedora 21 and Elementary Luna OS (looks fantastic – a lot like a Mac). It has been a headache getting them all to work as well as the old Apple IDisk did until today. The solution I found is to use the Swedish WebDav called ‘CLOUD ME’ http://cloudme.com. (This I think has replaced the old Mydisk.se which has since been closed last year). CloudMe works without using fiddly BROWSERS (as most are now) each time (unless you need to make the first ‘shared folder’ without which you cannot share anything. That is a simple set up using the Browser that one time).

When signed up to CLOUD ME (3GB is free) you can have access your WebDrive through an (https) link – which will bypass the usual problems of firewall on different computers and such. So my problem is solved. Try it out.

Add your MAC link as follows (use) https://webdav.cloudme.com/xyz
(xyz is your set up name). And then use the same for mapping your PC drive to exactly the same address. Note you must set up a ‘shared’ folder in CloudDrive first.
Then in another computer (such as Ubuntu type in Server: (note: I have not checked all Linux flavours but if one works, then all should).. Try also LINUX abbreviation ‘dav’ on some Linux webdav links such as: webdav.cloudme.com/xyz (which works for me)!

Now flash has gone Video is better (I use TenFourFox7450 with QT link for video) we can all access WebDav and keep our old macs going indefinitely. Viva PPC!

    Good luck!
