Video Plugin Flash Facebook PowerPC

A few weeks ago, I got a message that advised I wasn’t able to watch the a video on facebook, using a mac powerpc.  It looks like the flash/plugin it’s not compatible with Facebook!  The maximum flash update you can get is version 10.1 and to be able to watch Facebook’s videos, you need version 11.1.
Good news… Someone already looked out for us and created or modified the required plugin for mac powerpc users!
I did install this in my sister’s PowerBook running Leopard, and it worked very well!  Hopefully this will fix our problems in the future.
For more informations you can watch the youtube video here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCrAKhv3R_c

With this plugin you will be able to watch Flash videos from Facebook on your Mac PowerPC, using Safari.  Hooray!  This plugin only works with Safari, but maybe soon we will be able to use with TenFourFox!
I really appreciate my PowerPC friend’s blog – http://ppcluddite.blogspot.com/  who posted this great news for all survivors of Mac PowerPC!  This just goes to prove that it’s not time to turn off our machines just yet…

  1. There’s a comment in the TenFourFox blog to get flash working with TFF here:

    http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/2011/12/90b1-available.html

“Regarding the hacked Flash: If one *wanted* to trick a website into believing Flash 11 was installed on a PPC Mac with Tenfourfox, one would actually just need to edit pluginreg.dat (in the FF user profile) accordingly (11.1.102.55 & 11.1 r102) and keep on using whatever plugin is installed. One would thereby utilize a stupidity in Firefox, viz. that this browser reports to the website whats in that file, not what’s actually installed. Even if one exchanged the plugin with the hacked one (and one wouldn’t do this on a production machine, for heaven’s sake), TFF would still report the old version “10.1” as long as pluginreg.dat isn’t updated. In any case, one would *not* have to install a plugin from an unknown (in this case certainly well-meaning) source and make one’s Mac even more vulnerable than it actually is from the original Adobe plugin (on second thought, can it get any worse?). Safari users would need to install the hacked version, though.”

  2. Thankfully you can still watch those videos directly from YouTube site. Support for Power PCs are being dropped everywhere, Silverlight, Spotify, Flash, even Safari for 10.5 is no longer being updated I think. The time for upgrade has came!
It is a shame, because PowerPCs are great machines and could live much longer.

  4. Thanks for the link! It works on Firefox as well! I agree with the others who have replied. . .it’s a shame they don’t continue to support the PPC system. We have a PowerMac G5 and I have an iBook G4. . .both going and strong and BOTH work better than some of the new stuff I’ve had the displeasure of using, for whatever reason! Thanks again! Hopefully, this “fix” will last for awhile!

  5. Thank you for this! I was getting tired of not being able to view native Facebook videos and/or listen to mp3 links in the window.

I’m running TenFourFox on a 2003 1 GHz G4 eMac with 1 GB RAM. The hacked plugin worked perfectly with only a browser shutdown/restart needed. This after I had tried to manually hack the Adobe Flash plist files, causing my old Flash player to become corrupted and crashing my browser.

So glad I found this page! I’ve reposted this to Facebook, so hopefully others will see it as well.

  6. Thank you soo much for this quick fix! I did not have to restart my computer (PowerBook G4), worked straight away with Safari and Firefox as well! Great stuff, it’s been very annoying that I couldn’t watch fb videos but now it’s over!

  11. More sites are now demanding v11.7 as the minimum supported Flash, and thankfully our favourite pipe-totin’ has provided an update! See his YouTube:
